F1 cars taking a corner on a track.

Vibrant race cars zoom by on the Formula 1 track below you amid the loud cheers of the crowd. The smell of high-octane fuel permeates the air as warm sunlight drenches your skin. You arguably feel just as alive and adrenaline-filled as the Formula 1 racers making the ground shake beneath you.

Although every Formula 1 track has unique qualities that make it exciting, some are more challenging than others. The more difficult a track is, the more exhilarating the adventure for spectators and racers alike. Let’s explore four of the most difficult F1 tracks that are perfect for pushing drivers—and your nerves—to the limit.

1. Circuit de Monaco

As you gear up for the remainder of the current F1 season and brace for the next season, consider adding this track to your must-see bucket list, whether you experience it in person or on TV. Among the most difficult F1 tracks, the Circuit de Monaco is tucked away in La Condamine’s and Monte Carlo’s streets. It’s where the Monaco GP occurs. The circuit stands out for its winding, tight turns, including the popular hairpin turn (sometimes called the Fairmont Hairpin), the slowest Formula One racing corner. The F1 track is also very narrow, making it difficult to pass and requiring careful driving.

Another reason this circuit is among the most difficult F1 tracks is its significant elevation changes, which include steep uphill stretches followed by swift descents. The Monaco Grand Prix’s tunnel section also tests drivers' adaptability as they move from broad sunlight to low light. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes set the lap record at the track with a time of 1:12.909 on May 23, 2021.

2. Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

The Ardennes, located near the Belgian towns of Stavelot and Spa, is home to the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, where the Belgian GP is held. The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is among the world's most recognizable and difficult F1 tracks partly due to its Raidillon and Eau Rouge features. The Eau Rouge is a steep left turn at a hill’s base, while the Raidillon is a fast right, left, and right combination that goes up a hill and ends at a blind peak. Navigating the Raidillon requires bravery and precise control.

Another reason to prioritize viewing races on this F1 track, one of F1’s hardest tracks, is its dramatic height changes. These elevation changes provide thrilling driving experiences and unique challenges. Long straights such as the Kemmel Straight, also provide opportunities for overtaking and fast-paced racing. Lewis Hamilton again set the lap record at this track with a time of 1:41.252 on August 29, 2020.

3. Marina Bay Street Circuit

In the center of Singapore is Formula 1’s Marina Bay Street Circuit, which is situated in the Kallang and Downtown Core areas. The F1 Singapore Grand Prix is held at the circuit, one of F1’s hardest tracks. The track, which is similar to the Circuit de Monaco, winds through the city’s streets but is the only F1 night race, potentially presenting visibility challenges for drivers.

The Marina Bay Street Circuit’s iconic corners make it one of the most difficult F1 tracks. The track’s difficult corners include Turn 10 (formerly called the Singapore Sling) and Turn 18 (a location where cars pass beneath a grandstand). Daniel Ricciardo of RB set the lap record at the track with a time of 1:34.486 on September 22, 2024.

4. Hungaroring

The Hungaroring is situated just outside of Budapest, close to Mogyoród. Since 1986, the Hungarian Grand Prix has been held at this permanent motorsport track, one of the most difficult F1 tracks.

The Hungaroring is notorious for its narrow, twisting configuration, which makes passing extremely difficult. Compared with other Formula One tracks, the track is also relatively narrow, which makes passing more challenging. Cars must additionally maintain high downforce F1 vehicle setups for medium-speed and slow curves, which improves cornering performance but reduces straight-line racing speed. Lewis Hamilton set the lap record at the track with a time of 1:13.447 on July 18, 2020.
